The American Legion is dedicated to supporting young people in their pursuit of higher education by offering a variety of scholarships and resources. Each year, we help award millions of dollars in scholarships to high school students. Our opportunities are open to everyone, including the relatives of wartime veterans and participants in our programs. Additionally, we provide a comprehensive guide, "Need a Lift?" to help students find and secure scholarships.

American Legion Post 30 Sponsors a Boys State Program.

American Legion Boys State is one of the most respected and selective educational programs for high school students, focusing on government instruction. This participatory program allows each student to become an active part of their local, county, and state government operations.

Since its inception in 1935, Boys State has been a cornerstone program of The American Legion, created to counter the Fascist-inspired Young Pioneer Camps. The program was the brainchild of two Illinois Legionnaires, Hayes Kennedy and Harold Card, who organized the first Boys State at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 30 sponsors a similar program for young ladies called Girls State. At Boys State, participants gain firsthand experience with the rights, privileges, duties, and responsibilities of a franchised citizen. The training is both objective and practical, with students elected to various offices running city, county, and state governments. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chorus, and recreational programs.

High school juniors are selected by local American Legion Posts to attend the program. In most cases, the expenses associated with attending are covered by a sponsoring American Legion Post, a local business, or another community-based organization.

American Legion Boys State is conducted in 49 Departments of The American Legion, with Hawaii being the only exception. While each Boys State operates as a separate corporation and may vary in content and procedure, they all adhere to the fundamental concept of teaching government from the township to the state level.
